The aggressive and quite illogical idea of a single religion for all mankind, a religion universal by the very force of its narrowness, one set of dogmas, one cult, one system of ceremonies, one ecclesiastical ordinance, one array of prohibitions and injunctions which all minds must accept on peril of persecution by men and spiritual rejection or eternal punishment by God, that grotesque creation of human unreason which has been the parent of so much intolerance, cruelty and obscurantism and aggressive fanaticism, has never been able to take firm hold of the Indian mentality.Sri Aurobindo
The Vedas are the bedrock of the Indian culture.Composed thousands of years ago by mystics and seers, also known as Rishis, they are the narratives of man's journey to the infinite. The Vedas are a picturesque description of the inner battles and travails which a man has to undergo as he rises to a supranormal consciousness. It is an unending battle with hostile forces who are inimical to his upward journey and would prefer that man remains confined to his animal origins.
Tapasya or a single minded concentration on the goal was the secret of the power of the ancient Rishis.Even the Gods had to abjectly surrender before the mighty Rishis and would seek their help when they were invaded by the Asuras. The higher domains which the Rishis conquered has had its impact on Indian culture for the past 5000 years.
The Vedas still remain the eternal source of all knowledge available to man.
