Karna is a mythological character from The Mahabharata who symbolises the triumph of the spirit over adverse circumstances.
Abandoned by Kunti, his mother because he was born out of wedlock and rescued by a poor chariot driver's wife,Karna has to undergo all the trauma and insecurity which a foster child has to undergo. He is deprived of any formal education because of his foster parent's low status.Entirely self-taught in the martial arts,he rises to become the greatest warrior of the age.He is spurned by Draupadi who insults him publicly calling him a 'Sarathi-putra'.Duryodhana,the Kaurava king, befriends him and makes him a ruler of one of the provinces.
Scared of his rising prowess,Indra,a God,comes disguised as a Sadhu, and begs Karna for his magical shield.Without a moment's hesitation Karna removes the shield from his body and gives it to Indra. When Kunti begs Karna to spare her five children,Karna grants her prayer, saying that except Arjuna,he will not harm her other children.
In the battle of Mahabharata,Karna out of loyalty to Duryodhana, decides to fight with the Kauravas.Even Krishna knows that Karna can single-handedly alter the course of battle and treacherously plots the death of Karna.
Karna remains one of the greatest heroic figures of all times.
